
“Veterinary Office Assistant”
Course Details
Length of Course
The veterinary office assistant program is seven months in length and includes a three week practicum.
Program start dates
Starts every February and August. Class size is limited.
Entrance Requirements
All applicants must have a grade 12 or equivalency with an acceptable level of competence in the use of the English language. In order to be acceptable into the program, applicants must successfully write a competency exam and essay.

Financial Aid
McKay Career Training is designated for Canada and Saskatchewan student loans and is registered with the provincial government under Saskatchewan Learning. Contact the college for further information. Canada and Saskatchewan Student Loans may be available to qualified students.
School day schedule
The veterinary office assistant program classes run Monday through Friday from 8:45 am to 3:45 pm. Class times may vary throughout the program.

Practicum and job placement are discussed once they are enrolled in the program.

Success Strategies
Students gain the tools to change beliefs, habits, and attitudes in order to set higher goals and build a positive self-image.
Human Relations
This class gives instruction on how to turn conflict into opportunity by looking at problems creatively from a new perspective with new ideas, as well as, how to deal fairly with conflict in personal lives and in the work place.
Business Communications
This class gives instruction in the following areas:
- Eight basic parts of speach
- Correct use of punctuation and capitalization
- Professional correspondence and proof reading
- Developing a portfolio
- Listening skills and professionalism
Office Administration and Skills
Several classes give instruction in the following areas:
- Time management, work ethic and professional development
- Bookkeeping, purchasing and sales
- Reception, appointments, and telephone answering
- Records management
- Forms and prescription labels
- Computer applications on current software (word processing, tables, charts & spread sheets)
- Keyboarding – proper techniques and use of alphabetical keyboard, business formatting of correspondence and speed development to 45 wpm
- Veterinary specialty software
- Clinic simulation
Theory
The student will receive instruction in the following areas:
- Medical terminology, general anatomy & physiology
- Vaccine protocols
- Nutrition
- Small animal and horse restraint
- Cat, dog, horse and cattle breeds
- Pocket pets
- Parasites and parasite products
- Surgery awareness
- Clinical procedures
- Medical conditions & emergencies
- Behaviour
